FAQ's

Why hire an interior designer?

Because, plain & simple, a good designer knows good design. We study trends, we know design rules, we understand quality, we value the importance of the little details, and with that expertise and knowledge . . . we can oversee every aspect of the design process to help you better achieve the look and feel you're wanting in your unique living space.

Here's a few tips to get you started:

What is the best sheen of interior paint?

Paint sheen is very important and depends on many factors. The typical wall sheen is eggshell unless you feel you can brave a flat sheen. Ceilings should always be flat and non-reflective, (except in moisture ridden areas such as bathrooms). Trim and baseboard sheen should fall anywhere from semi-gloss to high gloss, and there are many specific paints used for interior and exterior doors.

Can I mix metals?

There was once a time when mixing metals was frowned upon, but in today's trends it's not only done, but celebrated. There's, of course, a right and wrong way to successfully achieve this look by following a few important guidelines, such as: choosing a dominant metal, limiting the number of metals in a space, considering undertones when matching like-metals, paying attention to sheen and finishes, and introducing transitional pieces that contain two different metals.

How far down should lighting and fans hang?

Designers utilize a set standard scales, many times printed in manufacturers guidelines, to determine these measurements; however, standing back and visualizing plays a huge role in these decisions as well. This is where a well trained eye can make all the difference in maintaining balance, serenity, functionality, and perfect lighting in any room.

Does all my furniture have to face the direction of the TV in a room?

No, absolutely not!! Though it is more common than not to arrange all furniture facing towards a television . . . this decision can be dependent upon other factors such as family size and ages, typical relaxation habits of a homeowners, room flow, and basic personal preference. Some fun products trending the marketplace recently disguise TV's as artwork or mirrors with elegant framing which adds more sophistication to living spaces.

What size area rug should be used in a living room?

The standard area rug size for a living room is 9' x 12', but just because this is one of the most popular rug sizes doesn't mean it'll work for every living room. A good "rule of thumb" is it should be anchored by at least one piece of furniture and not viewable from the back side. You will always want to consider the dimensions of your living room and furniture to find the perfect rug in this space, and we're here to help.

Curtains and Blinds

Should curtains be hung to touch or not tough the floor?

It depends. You have the option of letting drapery "puddle" on the floor if you prefer that look, otherwise, drapes not purposely hung in this manner should just ever so slightly "kiss" the floor. Bedrooms and more luxurious rooms can appear more elegant when drapes are puddled; however, more functional rooms such as kitchens, bathrooms, and high traffic areas will be better off with shorter drapes as to not interfere with functionality.
